Cultivate is a curated spiritual formation reader designed with the busy professional in mind. We hope that it will introduce you to great books, sermons, and stories that will intellectually challenge you and foster great discussions in the Christian community.
We believe that God’s redemptive purposes extend to all aspects of our lives, including the work of our hands. Shortly after creation and before the fall “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (Gen 2:15). The Hebrew word translated “to work” in the ESV, avodah, can mean everything from cultivate, serve, and work, to worship. We believe that the sovereign God has placed each individual exactly where he intends them to be with the expressed purpose of worshipfully cultivating the territory around them.
We also believe that our vocational pursuits provide an excellent laboratory for thinking through how the gospel applies to every aspect of our life and world. Every vocation is really a “call” or “summons” by the king of the universe, whether it is working the ground, designing a building, caring for children, preforming surgery, washing windows, or engaging in a financial transaction. Each of these pursuits reflects different aspects of the character of God and each of them have suffered from the curse of our fall.
We long for the renewal of all things (Rev 21:5), and we desire to participate in Christ’s redemptive work by extending the transforming presence of the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ in the world. We hope that Cultivate will be a resource that will help and encourage you to do the same.
